EEGLAB, from the Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience, is one of the most widely used EEG toolboxes. It is a MATLAB environment with strong ICA and ERP workflows, a large plugin ecosystem, and two decades of methods published against it. If your lab's pipeline and citations live there, that is a strong reason to stay.
People look for an alternative for a few recurring reasons: no MATLAB licence, a need for machine learning beyond what plugins offer, or wanting the whole study (including model evaluation) in one place. Those are the cases this page covers.
EEGLAB and BCILattice side by side
| EEGLAB | BCILattice | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | MATLAB (compiled version also available) | Desktop app for Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Licence | Open source, free | Proprietary, free plan available |
| ICA | Core strength, many plugins | ICA Review with FastICA or Picard and reasoned component suggestions |
| ERP and time-frequency | Core strength | Epoching, ERSP/ITC with cluster-permutation masking |
| Machine learning | Through plugins or your own MATLAB code | A node canvas of classical, Riemannian and deep models |
| Evaluation | You implement it | Grouped, LOSO and nested CV blocks; a validation tab flags leakage |
| Source localisation | Yes, via plugins | No |
| Publishing | Paper and files | Optional publication of study, dataset and model on BCINexus |
When to stay with EEGLAB
Source analysis
BCILattice does not do source localisation. EEGLAB with its plugins, Brainstorm, FieldTrip or MNE do.
A plugin you depend on
If a specific EEGLAB plugin is central to your method, keep it.
Replicating published EEGLAB pipelines
Reproducing a pipeline in a different tool costs more than it returns.
Using both
You do not have to migrate. BCILattice imports EEGLAB .set files directly, as well as EDF, BDF, GDF, FIF, VHDR and CNT, so a common arrangement is to clean data in EEGLAB and bring it into BCILattice for the decoding half: features, models, cross-validation and reporting.
Questions
Is there an EEGLAB alternative that does not need MATLAB?
Yes. MNE-Python is a free Python library, Brainstorm has a standalone version, and BCILattice is a desktop application that needs neither MATLAB nor Python.
Can BCILattice open EEGLAB .set files?
Yes. EEGLAB .set files import directly, alongside EDF, BDF, GDF, FIF, BrainVision VHDR, CNT and tabular formats.
Is BCILattice better than EEGLAB?
For different things. EEGLAB is stronger for ICA-centred ERP work, plugins and source analysis. BCILattice is stronger for machine learning, deep learning and honest model evaluation in one project.

EEG Analysis Tools Compared
The honest answer to "which EEG tool should I use" is that they solve different problems. Here is what each is strongest at, and where BCILattice fits.
MNE-Python Alternative with a Graphical Interface
MNE-Python is a library, and the best one for scripted EEG analysis. BCILattice is an application built on the same stack, for when you would rather click through a study than program it.
Free EEG Analysis Software
There is excellent free EEG software. The real cost is in what you have to set up, learn or write before you get a result, and that varies a lot.
EEG Artifact Removal: Eye Blinks, Muscle and ICA
Blinks, muscle tension and line noise are often larger than the brain signal you want. Removing them is a sequence of decisions, and each one should be visible and reversible.
